Once
again we’ve had a busy year at the 6/12th, we’ve attended most
district events, had a summer camp and held entertaining and educational pack
evenings, been on outings and raised some funds.
Below
is a breakdown of what we have been doing over the last 12 months.
We
had an enjoying day out at Gilwell Park (The National Scout camp site), doing
such thing as jousting, swimming, human football, tennis, bouncy slide and
karaoke as well as other activities. We also started the Local history badge
with the Blue Plaques walk around Mitcham. The 36th Mitcham came to
us for a joint evening of balloons, and they returned the favour by inviting us
to a water fight at their hut. The rest of our Tuesdays were taken up with
sports day team selection (unfortunately this event was cancelled due to bad
weather), flag making (do we think that a green sheet of paper counts as making
the Libyan Flag?), a Native American evening with costumes, face paint and war
dances.
August/September
2004
The
highlight of our year was our week’s summer camp to Skreens Park with the 4th
Morden, 8th Reigate and the 36th Mitcham on the theme of
the Olympic games, alas we only had 3 cubs but they all gained their camper and
air activities and went on outings to the seaside, swimming pool, go bananas
and Duxford Air museum and enjoyed activities including archery, raft building
and canoeing.
Normally
we meet during the summer holidays but this year the leaders had a well-earned
break. In September the cubs designed a recruitment poster and they seemed to
enjoy posting them. In anticipation of entering a team in the district swimming
gala we took the cubs over to the Canons, our thanks goes to Addy for helping
our adult to child ratio. It was a shame that with the swimming levels, we were
unable to select a team, but the older cubs were able to swim for the scouts.
Out
Tuesday nights were educational we played ‘operation’, we had an evening on
‘observation and co-ordination’. The cubs were asked to give a presentation on
either the effects of alcohol, smoking, bad diet or lack of exercise. This was
the evening we had our ‘pack check up’ and Reece Frame produced an outstanding
power point presentation (the District have used this on training evenings for
leader from other packs).
We
have also been ten- pin bowling with the 4th Morden at the David
Lloyd centre. We all had a good time, with thanks to Mark Colebrook for driving
the mini bus.
We
started the winter with a joint fireworks night at the District Headquarters
with our beavers and the 36th Mitcham, special thanks goes to
Brenda, John, Martin, Peter, Sharon and Sue and everyone else for all the work
involved in making this a very enjoyable night.
The
Tuesdays were taking up with a variety of themes including a ‘Heaven and Hell’
evening, (it was interesting to do Grand Howl facing Elvis Presley). The scout
invested 3 cubs into the troop and some of the pack left due too old age, good
luck to the new sixers and seconders. We celebrated St. Andrew’s day by doing
tug of war, tossing the caber, designing a tartan / coat of arms, eating
shortbread and drinking Irn-bru, we also entered a team in district
handicraft competition, the 4 selected
cubs made an Olympic medal, torch and village. We didn’t win in the view of the
judges but in Chil’s view they deserved a medal. Thanks go to Jamie for
transporting the gear to the event.
We
held another joint evening with the 4th Morden based on a cowboy and
Indian theme (they were the Indians and we were cowboys), there was a cake sale
and a campfire singsong.
We held a joint beavers and cubs Christmas
party.

“Oh
no we didn’t, Oh yes we did” WELL DONE TO BRENDA, for all her hard work in
organising our visit to see the lovely “Claire Sweeney” in Aladdin at the New
Wimbledon Theatre.
We
held a football theme evening and even though it was suggested that the cubs
should not turn up in a “Brighton kit” Chil was dumbfounded that we had a
“Brighton” fan in the pack.
One of our evenings was based on the “Jungle
Book”; the cubs designed our mural for one of the columns. The cub section
gives great respect to Ali for her hard work on our mural.
As
a section we attended the district ‘Scientist badge day’ the cubs went to bases
such as vinegar volcanoes, circuits, magnets and the human body. Once again
thanks to Addy for her help on the day. The 11th and the 36th
Mitcham joined us for a winter sports evening to sample our versions of skiing,
fishing, and sledging and snowballs.
Other
Tuesdays have been taken up with
pancake night, maps, a Knot and rope evening and a fantastic ‘I’m a celebrity get me out of here!’ evening
that included, Fluffy bunnies, feel the object, find the starburst in beans,
custard or rice pudding and the “coffin of death”
The
pack celebrated St David’s day. We would like to thank Rosemary for the Welsh
cakes and we hope the daffodils are blooming well. After a bit of a sabbatical
the “question of the week” has made a welcome return, Dizzy (Charline) and
Sonny (Ali) deserve a big thank you for organising and marking this.
The
cubs had a fun filled evening based on St Patrick’s day and have learned about
compass points and contour lines.
As
part of a nation wide incentive the group “climbed the height of Everest” by
climbing the inside of the Civic Centre, we were impressed with the turtle,
Harry Potter, dinosaur and samurai costumes and raised approx. £200.00

The
District held an adventure day at Frylands Wood for cubs over 9. The cubs took
part in a wide range of activities such as assault course, archery, outdoor
cooking, pedal karts, rifle shooting and water rockets.
I
was so proud that my full leadership team gave up a Sunday to staff the day.
Thanks to Jamie and Mark for driving on the day.
MANY BEAVER COLONIES, CUB PACKS AND SCOUT TROOPS RUN ON TWO OR THREE LEADERS, I AM ONE OF THE LUCKIEST LEADERS IN THE COUNTRY THAT I HAVE EIGHT PEOPLE BACKING ME UP, MARK IS A BEAVER LEADER AND STEVE IS A SCOUT LEADER AND YET BOTH OF THEM GIVE UP THEIR TIME ON A TUESDAY NIGHT.
